I laugh when I see people bragging about how they’re successful multi-taskers.
There’s no such thing as successful multi-tasking.
When you multi task, you’re sucking at everything you do.
The only way to get good at something, is to clear your desk, close Twitter, turn off your phone, turn off the TV, and make sure there’s no physical distractions in your room.
I know it’s easier said than done; especially if you have a demanding spouse or children.
But it is what it is.
If you can’t devote to your own learning, then you’ll never become great at any new skills.
If you can’t focus, you’ll never become a gifted programmer.
In fact; you won’t even get around to coding your first project.
That’s why if you have any intention of getting good at anything (not just web development; I mean anything) – You have to focus.
If you want to multitask your way through life, you can count on piss-poor results.
You don’t have to take my word for it.
Find any successful person on the planet, and ask them how much time they spend focusing upon harnessing their craft.
But, they might not respond right away.
Because chances are; they’re too busy focusing upon things that are important to them, and aren’t paying attention to FaceBook and Twitter.
