New WordPress Blogging FAQ
I’ve been building blogs and websites for a while now. After all of that research and development, I’ve put together a handful of the most popular blogging questions that you may encounter. Continue reading to learn more!
# 1 – What’s The Best Blog Platform For New Bloggers?
There are endless options for new bloggers, and many of them are excellent with their unique pros and cons. Therefore, it may be best to experiment with different platforms and see which one you like the most.
Any of the popular blogging platforms rock. WordPress, Tumblr, Medium, or any other famous blogging platform is tremendous. Of course, I’m a huge fan of WordPress. The MrComputerScience.com blog proudly runs on WordPress.org. There are also other blogging options to consider.
Whenever someone asks which theme, blogging platform, or website builder is best, I think back to how difficult it was to build a website before the day of the big blogging platforms and popular landing page builders!
These days, building pages and blogs is a piece of cake. You have many high-quality choices to choose from and consider. Spend time researching a handful of well-known blogging platforms, and then decide which one you like the best. That’s the best strategy, I think!
# 2 – How Much Does Blogging Cost?
I would say that blogging is either free or relatively inexpensive. If you’re just getting started with a blog, then you probably won’t have much website traffic. Therefore, your hosting costs should be negligible.
You can also use many blogging platforms without spending a penny. WordPress.com, Tumblr, Blogger, Medium, and others are free to start. However, some blogging platforms offer premium upgrades. Upgrades may include a specialized domain name, more plugins, better support, premium themes, et cetera.
All in all, MrComputerScience.com costs roughly $50 – $150 per year to run. There’s a large variance because sometimes the cost of domain renewal changes. Also, other costs such as web hosting, SSL certifications, et cetera change sometimes. That said, running a blog is relatively cheap.
I also invested in a collection of premium themes, premium landing page builder, et cetera. However, these premium themes and plugins aren’t necessarily required for new bloggers! The point is that it’s possible to launch a blog on a tiny, shoestring budget. However, you can also enhance and upgrade your blog in various ways, should you wish.
# 3 – Is WordPress Free?
The short answer is yes. However, there are some caveats! Remember that there are two versions of WordPress! There are WordPress.com and WordPress.org blogs. I’m a big fan of both. However, there are a few key differences.
Each version offers free blogging solutions that you can use.
WordPress.org is a “self-hosted” solution of WordPress. In other words, you download WordPress and install it on your web host. If that sounds like too much tech work, then I don’t blame you. Luckily, there are tons of affordable web hosts that make launching a WordPress blog simple.
In other words, many popular web hosts have features that enable you to install WordPress easily and without tech stress.
WordPress.org is also 100% free to use for commercial or personal use! However, in most cases, you need to pay for a premium web host. There are also free web hosts that you can use too. However, a premium web host like NameCheap, BlueHost, GoDaddy, Kinsta, or Host Gator offers excellent WordPress hosting for very little cost.
You can also try the WordPress.com flavor of WordPress. WordPress.com handles the hosting for you. The WordPress.com blogging service is economical and it couldn’t be easier to use.
WordPress.com also offers exciting premium upgrades that you’ll love if you want additional features, additional storage, eCommerce capabilities, et cetera.
Either way, I’m a huge fan of both versions of WordPress and I think that either choice offers a very reasonable price tag and endless potential for your blog or website.
# 4 – What’s The Best WordPress Theme?
There are tons of WordPress themes that rock! There are also way too many to test!
There are hundreds of amazing themes that you can use in the WordPress Themes directory. You’re bound to find something that you love.
Another big benefit of WordPress is that you can quickly switch and preview themes without tech stress.
However, there’s one WordPress theme source that I love above all others.
MrComputerScience.com runs on the StudioPress collection of themes. I’m a huge fan of StudioPress themes because their themes are simple, elegant, fast, and the themes look great across different devices.
If you like the style of MrComputerScience.com, then I encourage you to check out and consider StudioPress. StudioPress is amazing for bloggers, and they’re by far my favorite choice for snazzy WordPress themes.
# 5 – How Can Bloggers Generate Leads?
If you take a look at the MrComputerScience.com blog, you’ll notice that I promote my email newsletter in my blog’s main menu. If you look closely, you’ll also notice that I have a big call to action at the end of each post promoting my newsletter, along with a few affiliate links!
The point is that, with WordPress, you have endless options to promote your email newsletter. Some plugins and themes also allow you to have a clever “welcome bar” where you can promote a call to action. All themes are different. So, pay attention to any special widgets or features that your blog boasts.
Conclusion
WordPress and your love for writing go together like peanut butter and jelly. If you love to write as much as I do, then what are you waiting for? WordPress makes sharing your content with the world elementary.
I also forgot to mention that blogging is a ton of fun! I crack a massive smile every time I publish a new blog post. Blogging rocks!
